Halloween Costumes 2012

Every year people dress up as their favorite pop culture icon – and this year won’t disappoint. Still looking for a costume? We’ve got you covered. Here are our predictions for the Top Halloween Costumes of 2012.

This South Korean rapper has been releasing music for years, but his summer hit, Gangnam Style took the world by storm and broke the Guinness World Record for the most “liked” video in YouTube history – it has over 531 million views!  With celebrities like Britney Spears and Ellen Degeneres copying Psy’s signature moves to the countless internet parodies of the “horse-riding dance,” this is sure to be a popular costume this Halloween and it’s fairly easy to recreate. Things you’ll need: a blue tuxedo jacket, black pants, a bow tie, and sunglasses – and don’t forget to learn the dance!

Big Bird has been around since 1969 but has never been more relevant than this year, when Mitt Romney threatened to do away with PBS and Big Bird altogether to reduce the federal budget deficit. We anticipate that there will be flocks of Big Birds roaming the streets this Halloween, showing support for everyone’s favorite childhood character. Halloween stores across the country are stocking up on Big Bird costumes following the first presidential debate – find the costume here. For extra effect, go as dead Big Bird – cross out the eyes and don an R.I.P t-shirt.

For you indie lovers out there, it’s always a great Halloween season when Wes Anderson releases a new film with characters you can’t wait to recreate. This years release, Moonrise Kingdom, followed two love-struck adolescents on an epic journey. In true Wes Anderson form, the young couple’s outfits are sure to be the go-to costumes for hipster couples everywhere. To get their look, visit your local thrift store and keep your eyes peeled for vintage Boy Scout costumes and pink dresses – but don’t forget to accessorize with a map, camping backpack, and Davy Crockett coonskin cap. Those will be essential to pull this one off!

Honey Boo Boo’s one-liners (does “a dolla makes me holla Honey Boo Boo” ring a bell?) made her a runaway star when she was featured on TLC’s Toddlers and Tiaras – she and her family now have their own show, Here Comes Honey Boo Boo. This pint-sized redneck is bound to be a major costume choice this year and can be easily recreated. To go from you to Honey Boo Boo, dress as a pageant girl – big blonde hair, big dress, loads of makeup, and a bottle of fluorescent green Go Go Juice. If you want to make this a couples costume, dress your other half as Honey Boo Boo’s mom, Mama June (We’ll let you figure that one out on your own).

No 2012 Halloween costume list can be complete without the obvious and relevant choice of Presidential hopeful, Mitt Romney and our current President, Barack Obama. No matter which candidate you prefer, this costume choice will be one of the most popular this season. Most Halloween stores will carry the masks but hurry fast because they will definitely sell out! To take your costume to the next level, add props like a horse and bayonet or a binder full of women – maybe you can even pair up with Big Bird!
